School of Chemistry X-ray Crystallography and Powder Diffraction Service
The laboratory uses single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction to determine the atomic and molecular structure of a compound. We are able to offer analytical services to customers outside the School of Chemistry and University of Bristol.
Examples of services we can provide:
Single Crystal Determination
- Unit cell determination
- Data collection
- Structure solution & refinement
- Description of crystal structure, comparison, and data preparation for publication or reports
- Absolute structure determination
Powder diffraction
- Sample preparation
- Data collection (charged hourly)
- Phase identification - supplementary data must be made available where necessary.
- Phase purity
Research Work
Alongside more standard service type experiments to identify compounds or characterise phases, we also carry out some non standard experiments. These include (i) variable temperature measurements looking at for example temperature induced phase transitions or spin crossover, (ii) in-situ light irradiation to monitor and characterise solid state reactions, such as [2+2] cycloaddition reactions or photochromism, (iii) in-situ crystallisation of liquid samples.
